Physiology

Physiology is the study of how living organisms, organ systems, individual cells and biomolecules perform chemical and physical functions within living systems such as organisms or organs. It forms the foundation for many other biological disciplines like anatomy and medicine.

Physiology is a science that studies the chemical and physical processes behind basic body processes such as breathing, blood flow and heartbeat. Furthermore, it examines how homeostasis helps keep an internal environment constant within our bodies – this concept allows our bodies to adapt easily to external environmental changes which makes physiology so essential.

Exercise physiology is one of many areas where the science of physiology can be used, with exercise physiology exploring changes to the body during physical exertion and including molecular biology, biochemistry, biomechanics, hematology and skeletal muscle physiology as areas of study. Exercise physiology can provide insight for improved performance as well as reduced injury risks for elite athletes while simultaneously offering insight for overall health and wellbeing.

Mental Health

Mental health is an integral component of overall wellbeing. It impacts how we think, feel and interact with others – from our daily interactions to understanding life’s challenges more fully, learning new skills or working. Mental illness is real and can cause immense distress as well as problems functioning at home, school or in the community.

Maintaining mental wellness is just as vital as looking after physical wellbeing, yet many struggle to access assistance due to stigma or ignorance.

People suffering from mental illnesses can often be successfully treated using psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medications, enabling them to recover from their symptoms and live fulfilling lives, work productively, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Although the causes of mental health conditions are complex – including genetics, environmental and cultural influences, brain chemistry/circuitry changes due to trauma/stress experiences etc – the good news is that most individuals recover through proper treatments and return to functioning normally in daily life.
