Fiction writers use symbolism as a literary device to explore deeper themes and ideas without being explicit about them. It may take the form of objects, characters, events or metaphors – and can add multiple levels of meaning to stories. Through symbolism readers are allowed to interpret hidden meanings and explore larger themes more deeply – giving them an opportunity to connect more closely with a narrative work on an emotional level.
When using symbols in your own writing, it is essential to consider which themes you wish to explore before selecting appropriate symbols that align with those themes. If your theme involves freedom, for example, use symbolic imagery like birds, open fields and unlocked doors; for death-based themes use creepy settings or withering flowers as symbols – using this approach can create more impactful stories for readers.
